WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE NEW HIGH PRIEST? (HEBREWS 5:1-5)
Before Jesus came to Earth the Jewish religious hierarchy was presided over by a high priest. This priest was responsible for atoning for the sins of the Jewish people every year on the Day of Atonement. That was the only day during the year when he was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place in the Temple where the Ark of the Covenant was kept. The author of Hebrews teaches us that with His sacrifice Jesus became our new high priest. But how is Jesus any better than the high priests under the old system? Continuing his argument on the superiority of the new covenant over the old, in these verses the author of Hebrews contrasts human high priests with the perfect divine high priest we have working for us today.
